From Starving to Successful

I attended an excellent art marketing workshop in Boston a couple of weeks ago that I would highly recommend to other artists or creative professionals. It was a full day, and a TON of useful information, for $39.00. You can't really beat that. It felt like a high-end seminar but with the added benefit of some personal attention and a very reasonable fee. The guy who led the workshop is a gallery owner from Scottsdale, AZ. (My mother, a marketing exec, attended with me and she thought it was great too).

Art In Lanesville

The section of Gloucester where my studio is located, called Lanesville, has a yearly art show that focuses only on artists who live or work in Lanesville. There are a LOT of artists in this area considering how small the population is and this year there are 39 artists participating in the show.

There will be an opening on Friday, 8/14, and it will run throughout the weekend. The hours and location are here: lanesvillecommunity.org.

I will have 5 pieces in the show including these two.

Bartering

I love to barter! What a great way to get your work into the lives of others in exchange for their valuable skills. I needed some high res digital images of my paintings and my equipment isn't up to the task, so I posted an ad on craigslist with the offer of a free painting for 10-15 high quality images of my work. An artist in Boston responded right away, and she even drove all the way to my studio in Rockport with her equipment in tow to photograph my pieces. She was happy to have a painting of her beloved Boston Terrior in return which is pictured here. Not to mention it's a great way to network! Two of my paintings will be featured in the Salem Arts Association exhibit, “Blush”, which opens this Saturday, 7/11/09 and will run through July 26th. Saturday’s reception goes from 4-7pm and I will be there for the duration.

Another of my paintings will be featured in the show “You Are Here” at the Flatrocks Gallery in Gloucester, MA. The opening will be this Friday, July 10th from 7-9 and the show runs through the end of the month.

Motif #1 Days

Saturday, MAY 16th: I will be participating in downtown Rockport’s “Motif #1 Days“. I’ll be setting up my easel on Bearskin Neck/Rockport Harbor and I’ll be painting and greeting the public between 12pm and 5pm.

Friggin' boats

Living where I live it's hard not to be influenced by the surroundings, i.e. the ocean, boats, the beach, and boats.

My work has been mainly figurative over the past few years but I am trying to branch out and attempt painting more landscapes. Not so much because it's what people do here (although it is what people do here) but because I wanted a challenge. Sure, it would be nice to paint something accessible enough for a tourist to buy, but that's not the only inspiration. The main goal is to find a way to expand my subject matter, hold my interest, and have a desirable outcome. What I'd like is to find a space somewhere between traditional landscape and abstract/weird/new. I'm working on it.

This is a little one I did during a plein air session with my student a few weeks ago.
